Message from the Founder & CEO
A Letter of Purpose and Compassion

Julius Mugisha
Founder & CEODear Friends and Supporters,
Welcome to Hope for Prison Babies Initiative Uganda (HPBIU) — a vision born out of compassion, conviction, and a deep desire to restore dignity to some of the most forgotten members of our society: incarcerated mothers and their innocent babies born and raised behind bars.
As the Founder and CEO of HPBIU, I have walked into the heart of Uganda’s prison system and seen the harsh reality that babies — some just days old — are born and raised within prison walls. These children, despite their innocence, often begin life without the most basic necessities: love beyond confinement, access to quality healthcare, proper nutrition, education, or even the freedom to explore the world beyond a cell.
Our initiative was born to change that. We exist to shine a light where there has long been darkness — to give these babies a chance at childhood, and their mothers a path toward dignity, rehabilitation, and hope.
We believe that no child should begin life behind bars, and that every mother — no matter her past — deserves the opportunity to rebuild her life and nurture her child in a safe and loving environment. Through community support, policy advocacy, direct interventions, and rehabilitation programs, HPBIU is committed to breaking the cycle of incarceration and poverty, one life at a time.
We are a voice for the voiceless, a cradle of hope in places many would rather forget. But we cannot do it alone. We invite you to stand with us — to walk this journey of transformation and justice. Whether you are a partner, donor, volunteer, or advocate, your support makes it possible for us to turn prison walls into bridges of hope.
Together, let us raise a generation that was once born behind bars but destined to thrive beyond them.
With deep gratitude,
Julius Mugisha
