Who We Are

Hope for Prison Babies Initiative Uganda

Hope for Prison Babies Initiative Uganda is a non-profit, community-based organization dedicated to improving the lives of incarcerated mothers and their young children living in Uganda’s prison facilities. We work to promote the health, dignity, and human rights of these vulnerable women and children, ensuring that babies born and raised in prison have access to the care, love, and early childhood support they need to grow and thrive.

Our initiative recognizes that while prisons are designed for punishment and correction, babies are innocent and should not be subjected to the harsh realities of incarceration. We aim to bridge this gap by creating a supportive and humane environment where both mother and child are given the chance to survive and succeed beyond prison walls.

Why It Matters

A prison cell is no place for a child to grow up—but for many babies in Uganda, this is their first home. Without targeted support, these children face developmental delays, health risks, and emotional trauma.

By intervening early, Hope for Prison Babies Initiative Uganda offers these children a fighting chance at a brighter future and helps their mothers heal, bond, and rebuild.

Hope Inside the Walls: A Day in the Life of a Prison Baby

6:00 AM. The metal doors clang open. A mother gently rocks her baby, wrapped in a worn cloth, trying to keep warm on the concrete floor. Breakfast might be a small cup of porridge, shared between mother and child. There are no toys. No playground. No books. Just four grey walls and a world waiting […]

Born Behind Bars: Why Uganda Must Rethink Childhood in Prisons

03 Jul

In Uganda today, hundreds of children begin their lives behind prison walls—not because they’ve done anything wrong, but because their mothers are incarcerated.
